Louise Jones McKinney

Louise Jones McKinney is an educator, a business woman, and a community activist. Although she has retired from the Seattle Public Schools as Director of Academic Achievement, education remains her first love. Reflective of that is her promotion of high academic achievement at her church, Mount Zion Baptist , on whose Scholarship Ministry she serves as co-chair. In this capacity she works hard to assure the issuance of at least $50,000 annually to those students who warrant scholarships and grants-in-aid by virtue of their grade point average. She has also established the Mount Zion Scholarship Endowment Fund, whose worth is now almost $100,000. Further, she is secretary of the Harriet Tubman Circle, sings in the Women's Chorus, and serves as advisor to the board of the Louise Jones McKinney Learning Center.

Currently, in the business community, Mrs. McKinney serves as Secretary/Treasurer of GMSS, Inc., a women's business enterprise and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Southwest Mortuary.

Louise Jones McKinney, in addition to her continuing involvement in education and the time she spends in business, she is involved in a number of community endeavors. She chairs the Education and Outreach Committee of KCTS, Channel 9, and is co-chair of the Visiting Committee of the School of Social Work at the University of Washington. She is also a member of Harborview Hospital's Visiting Committee. She is on the Board of Directors of Bailey Boushay House, a facility for those living with AIDS; Hilltop House, a senior retirement residence; IDEA (Inner City Developmental Education in Action,) a prevention and intervention tutorial program; A Contemporary Theater (ACT.) Appointed by the King County Executive and approved by the King County Council, Mrs. McKinney is in her second term on the Board of Equalization and Appeals, where she hears the challenges of petitioners to the tax value the county has placed on their property.
