Tell Me More

The Model Family Mentorship Program began in January 1995 in the State of Washington as an experiment to bring together community, civic, and corporate interests targeted at increasing awareness of FAMILY related issues. Examining how continued lack of attention to such issues as Basic Family Resources and lack of access to the Arts, Science & Technology, Civic Engagement directly impacts systemic poverty, disinterest in community, acceleration in the decrease in family values, decrease in economic advancement; grid locking our communities and public policies.

Since then, Model Families has dedicated itself toward strengthening all families through mentorship and volunteerism. "Uniting a communities Strength in Volunteerism with its primary Need to focus on Strengthening Family". Recognizing that if, "Unity Is Our Path, then Let Families Be Our Guide" became our clear mission. The program is designed to address the devastating challenges facing the family structure. It is designed to demonstrate a working concept of the "Extended Family" model through our dedication to mentorship and volunteerism in order to strengthen family values, educational advancement, economic advancement, community awareness and broadening access to existing resources throughout our partnered communities. The organization provides access to basic family resources, outreach opportunities and activities for families designed to strengthen and encourage positive family development. The programs efforts have been directed at building strong families, focusing on marginalized and single parent house-hold issues, emphasizing activities which nurture healthy children and families, and offering our nationally recognized Family to Family mentorshp Skill Building model.

The endeavor is among the first of its kind anywhere in the country. The Model Family Mentorship Program works with over 165 participating low income families throughout the State of Washington. Our partnered communities are comprised in Seattle, Tacoma, and Spokane, Washington. The program year runs from Jan.-July, focusing on planned inter-action activities between participating Mentee Families and volunteer Mentor Families. Participating Mentees are referred to the program by established outside community partner organizations currently working with youth or families and then matched with Volunteers or Mentor families within the community to explore positive family activities developed around a planned interaction model.

Model Families is a 501C non-profit organization; funded privately through corporate partners & private community donations. It is because of our corporate sponsor partnerships, community relationships & our wonderful volunteer families, program advisers, program volunteers which all make the continued success of our program possible.
